Chelsea play Grimsby at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday in the third round of this year’s League Cup.
It is probably a game Frank Lampard could do without considering the number of injuries his team has suffered already this season. On the other hand, though, it is the perfect opportunity to ring the changes and give valuable playing time to other members of his squad. We will likely see close to a whole new side against the Mariners. Here, we try to predict Frank Lampard’s starting XI for the
match. We’re expecting Lampard to make 11 changes from the XI that started against Liverpool on Sunday. This game should see the first change to the goalkeeper’s position this season. Kepa Arrizabalaga has started each fixture in both the Premier League and Champions League this term, so this should be a great opportunity to give the Spain international a rest. Willy Caballero should, therefore, make his first appearance of the campaign. The defence should see plenty of changes. There was positive news from Frank Lampard in regards to Reece James recently, with the former Derby County boss indicating that the 19-year-old will feature in midweek. There is no reason why he will not be included from the beginning following his appearance for the club’s development squad last Friday. Ian Maatsen is a promising talent at left-back, but surely the manager will want to include some experience in the side. Marcos Alonso should be relatively fresh, having not played too much this campaign, and is likely to keep his place. Kurt Zouma only came on from the bench against Liverpool on Sunday, so he should come back into the side, while talented centre-back Marc Guehi, who recently signed a new contract, could make his first start. In midfield, Ross Barkley should be given the chance to redeem himself following his penalty miss against Valencia. He did not feature at all against the Reds, perhaps with a view to using him here. Scotland U21 international Billy Gilmour could be given the nod, while Jorginho and N’Golo Kante are likely to be among those saved for the Brighton match. The 21-year-old has not seen a minute of first-team action in the last three games. He will need to take his chance here, albeit against inferior opposition, to show his boss what he is made of. Pedro, again having not played against Liverpool, should return, while the man on the right wing is likely to delight fans of the Stamford Bridge outfit. After injuring his Achilles in April, prodigy Callum Hudson-Odoi is back and ready to prove his worth following the signing of his new long-term contract. Like James, he played for the U23s on Friday and even provided an assist. He should be able to show his class on Wednesday. Finally, expect Michy Batshuayi to start up front. Lampard will have a choice to make between him and Olivier Giroud but, with the latter likely to play a big role in more important matches this season, the Belgium international should be gifted some much-needed minutes.
